"I'm not saying don't do that. I'm saying that I'm not the best person to do that with."

Kagami and Royal exchange a series of messages, ending in the following.

"I'm not a professional. Unlike the Houses."

Then a quick response cause Kag doesn't wait "I don't want a professional. I want someone I trust."

"Darling I don't dally with friends."

"So never going to happen?"

"I'm not talking about this over messages, my dear. It's rude, and I don't do rude."

"I'm at home. You should be able to find it and I promise I have tea and coffee.."

"I will be drunk and/or hung over."

"However you arrive, come with an honest heart."

The apartment is in a nice building that has lovely older architecture. A building that working professionals would live in. Kagami's place is middle to higher on the levels. The door is a heavy door with no adorning on it. As the door opens up, the landing area has a closet for coats and a shoe rack that has slippers on it. The flooring is lovely laminate. To the right of the entrance is a nice kitchen with an island which acts as a cooler for alcohol, beers and wines. Above the fridge are the spirits. It's open concept into the living room which is surprisingly clean, a comfortable couch with a chaise, a recliner and a console for news. Book cases line each wall full of books on many topics. Down the hall to the right of the entrance, a walk in storage and across the hall from that a room full of tech and repair things. At the end of the hall, a clean white bathroom with a nice bathtub and opposite that the bedroom which is just a bed on the ground, two end tables and a dresser. Propeller fan's cool the place and candles are burning and sending a lovely fruit scent around the apartment.

Royal would be let upstairs by the bellman and the door to the apartment would be unlocked..

* * *

Royal is not his usual put-together self. His suit, although a fine dark grey number, is not as flashy as his usual fare. It's also a bit wrinkled, as is the dress shirt. His hair is mussed, and he looks, well, yes, he could be either drunk or hungover. He is a polite man, so there's a rap at the door and he lingers in the doorway. "Kagami?"

* * *

There is silence for a little bit before the door opens up and Kagami is there. He's bright eyed though he does have light bags under his eyes. He's wearing dark grey lounge pants and a nicely fitted t-shirt that says 'I went outside once but the graphics weren't that good.' His hair is really just all over the place. "Hey." He gestures for the man to enter and he heads into the kitchen. "What's your poison?"

* * *

"Look at that. A shirt that actually fits. A minor miracle, my friend. I applaud you." And Royal actually does, though only a soft golf clap for a moment. He looks around. "I don't know what I was picturing for your flat, but it wasn't this. It's quite nice." A beat. "Sorry, that sounded insulting. I just meant, I was picturing something a bit less refined. But I also do keep forgetting you aren't the young man you appear to be. Ah…" he looks to the kitchen. "Only if you're also having a drink."

* * *

Kagami chuckles a little and shakes his head. "Don't worry about it. Even in the other sleeve people assumed I lived surrounded by tech. Trinkets everywhere but I like my home to be calming. Except my office which is not." He grins and nods. He takes out two high end whiskey glasses and grabs the best, only for Royal. He pours two drinks and puts the expensive whiskey back. He takes the glasses and moves into the living room and holds the glass out in front of the most comfortable looking chair in the house.

* * *

"Did your uh, did your new clothes come in, then?" says Royal as he takes the glass. He sits down in the offered chair, but he sits forward, perched on the edge of it. Which makes said comfy chair less so. Smalltalk. A way to avoid talking about what they were just talking about in text. He takes a drink, nods in approval, then takes another small sip.

* * *

Kagami smiles slowly and then holds his drink. He sits on the couch which is a rather wide couch, almost like a twin bed. "They did. I have a bag of my dad's clothes in the closet to give back to him. All the new clothes are being washed, except this shirt since I needed to wear clothes while I had guests." He chuckles and sips his whiskey, not in a rush to talk about their texts either

* * *

So that means there's silence for a moment. It probably feels longer than it is. He scrubs fingers through his hair and wrinkles his nose. He really is regretting not just talking over text right now. "My life…" he begins after a moment, "…is incredibly complicated and not entirely my own."

* * *

The tech doesn't seem to mind the silence. He takes another sip of his drink before Royal starts. He turns his eyes and watches the man. "I can only imagine." His voice gentle and full of kind understanding. Those blue eyes watch the other with rapture.

* * *

"Why are you looking at me like that?" Royal rubs the back of his neck. He looks slightly uncomfortable, posture stiffer than is usual from him. He tosses back a good half of what's in the glass.

* * *

Kagami blushes and looks away from Royal. "Is not looking better?" He watches the drink swirl in his hand. Those eyes now hidden by long lashes and well, not looking at him. "I'm sorry."

* * *

"No, it's…" Royal inhales, hand cupping the back of his neck. "When I said I don't dally with my friends, I meant it. And dalliances aren't things that last. I had…" he takes a breath. "Oh, I might as well out with it. It was all over the tabloids for anyone who cares to look." The rest of the drink is downed.

"I had a fiancee. Approved by the King. A commoner, but a respectable one. Lovely girl. I cheated on her, but she was forgiving and patient about it, and hoped I'd settle down with time. Then…she got sick. Had to resleeve. Normally, royals can't marry anyone who has been resleeved without special permission. Permission is sometimes granted in the case of death by disease or accident." He tilts his chin up, and then says, "I didn't ask."

* * *

Kagami keeps his eyes down and frowns. "I'm sorry." He speaks softly. "About her." He frowns a little. "Dalliances are not meant to last if the people do not want them too." He points out. "It's possible to have a private dalliance and end it and still be friends. It matters how much love and respect you have for the other person." He points out quietly. "So if within a dalliance, one falls in love, they must learn what is best for the other and if that means they are no longer in a sexual relationship then that's what you do." He states resolutely. "As someone whose been in dalliances before…. The two I fell in love with. One got married and I happily let him go and we were friends. The second wanted to become a monk so we broke it off and I adore them both still."

* * *

"My point is, she didn't deserve that treatment," says Royal. He rolls the empty glass between his fingers. "I like you, Kagami. I consider you a friend. And you're vulnerable right now. I think you need a friend more than you need a shag so you can get used to your sleeve."

* * *

Kagami pushes himself up and moves into the kitchen and comes back to put the whiskey on the table beside Royal. He takes a seat again and keeps his eyes down. "She did not deserve it. Most people deserve better than they are treated." He slides back and takes another sip of his drink. He nods his head at the last statement and takes a deep breath.

* * *

"My point is also that I'm trying to do better by the people in my life. That's why I came to Bay City. To get away from my family and the scrutiny. To help people with the GPPI instead of just lecturing about history and hosting fancy parties." Royal doesn't reach for the bottle. "There was a time when I wouldn't have hesitated, and I wouldn't have thought about consequences. But that's not who I want to be anymore." Says the man who just came back from the Houses. But at least that is entirely transactional in nature.

* * *

He finishes off his drink and puts down his glass. He nods his head. "It's a noble thing you are doing." He speaks softly. "I just want to experience life. I can tell you in utmost detail what it's like to die but if you asked me what it's like to feel alive, I can't tell you." He plays with his fingers and keeps staring at them. "I did a lot of learning, a lot of growing. Two romances that went no where and yet I felt empty. I could fix almost anything. I died doing it." He grins a little. "So perhaps now that I have another sleeve, another chance at a wasted twenties, I want to jump right in."

* * *

"And I applaud you doing that. I truly do. And I want to help you with that." Royal leans forward in the chair even further. "A second chance is a beautiful thing. And you've got a whole new body to experience it with. The hedonist in me appreciates the beauty in that." The corner of his lips curl upward. "I'm not saying don't do that. I'm saying that I'm not the best person to do that with."

* * *

The young man speaks softly. "You know this sleeve. I give full consent for you to know it further. To be the first that I know of that will experience it. Though if that is not your wish, I respect that because I respect you. You are my friend, the only reason I offer myself to you." He shakes his head. "I don't want to be famous. It goes against trying to be anonymous. No tabloids. Just anonymous." He reaches over and pours himself some more to drink. "Though I want you to be happy. Anything I can do to make it so, I will do."

* * *

"All the more reason to not get entangled with me. The tabloids care far less about my exploits on this side of the pond, but it isn't nonexistent. Especially with my profile on this case." Royal shakes his head slowly. "It isn't your responsibility to make me happy, Kagami. That's…that's on me." He stands up and walks over, then holds his glass out for a refill. "I do appreciate that you trust me. It's flattering. But…"

* * *

Kagami pours Royal more of the drink, a lot more. He puts it down on the table and takes his own glass. "I am just a researcher and you are coming here for information." He shrugs. "If anything else happens, it's not like they'd know." He chuckles. "True happiness is on you yes but I can cook good meals and make you happy for the moment by being an idiot." He keeps his eyes down. "There is no but. I trust you. You are my friend."

* * *

"Oh, you haven't dealt with the tabloids, have you? They have insidious ways of knowing. I tried drugs once out of curiosity and they caught evidence. I had to pay a pretty penny to make sure it didn't get out." Royal snorts softly and then sips from the refilled glass. "Why won't you go to one of the Houses?"

* * *

Kagami shakes his head. "Unless you film something, my house is secure. I know. I'm slightly paranoid about that." He grumbles quietly. "Plus if one ever threatened my anonymity I would hack their networks and nuke them." He growls a little. He stands up. "Perhaps I don't want my first time in this body, orgasm, sex, kiss… anything to be with someone I don't know." He walks around and leans on the island sipping his drink. He's still not looking at Royal.

* * *

"You sound like an angry puppy when you do that," says Royal. But he sounds like he means that as a compliment, or at last finds it endearing. "Well, then we need to get you out and meeting some more people, then! I'm very good at introducing people to one another. What's your type?"

* * *

He growls a little at the puppy statement making him sound even more like a pup. He lifts those blue eyes. "I like guys about six two, brown hair, brown eyes, fit..named Dante." He sounds so nonchalant about it. "If you run into one let me know." He finishes off his whiskey and turns to open the fridge. "I have some sauteed vegetables I can heat up again."

* * *

Royal bites his bottom lip and ducks his head. He should have seen that coming, really. He looks into his only half-drunk drink and sets it down. "I should go," he says quietly. The edges of his ears might be a little red.

* * *

Kagami frowns and shakes his head. "You don't have to leave. I'll stop." He blushes and pulls out some vegetables. "I'll just stay this way. It's alright." He chuckles. "I met someone who'd seen the video of that meth. What are the chances there are two meth clones?"

* * *

"You are incredibly stubborn. Has anyone ever told you that?" says Royal with a sigh. He stands not too far from the door, hands in his pockets, looking like he still might flee. But then Kagami is talking about the case. "A video? What kind of video?" He steps over.

* * *

He grins and nods. "I am very stubborn but if I wasn't I wouldn't as effective." He puts the vege's back into a skillet and starts heating them. "There is a video circulating of a woman dancing. Ariana Longbow. Or what appears to be here. And … dancing as in stripping. I spoke to someone who'd watched the video." He starts flipping the vege's as the pan heats up. "What if more of her clones were stolen?"

* * *

"That would be a messy situation indeed," says Royal with a frown. "Don't suppose you can get me a copy of this video? It seems impossible that a meth clone could be stolen." His eye flickers, indicating he's bringing something up on his ONI.

* * *

The scent of amazing spices starts filling the kitchen. "I can get it for you and I'll clean it. The reason I never looked is because people say it might not be clean, could have a virus. I'll make sure it doesn't." He flips the vege's with a quick wrist tilt.

* * *

"Thank you. I'd appreciate that," says Royal with a slow nod. His ONI stops flickering, then, "I really should be going, though. I need some proper sleep." He steps up towards Kagami. Unless the other moves away or otherwise resists, he'll feel a hand on the back of his head and a kiss on his forehead. "You will make some other tall man named Dante very happy one day, my dear."

* * *

Kagami nods slowly when he says he should sleep. Then he feels those fingers and the kiss to his forehead. "Hopefully. Otherwise it's a lonely eternity." He grins warmly as he takes the vegetables off the stove and he grabs a take out corningware. He puts vege's into it and pops a lid on it and then moves close to Royal and puts it in his hands with a take out fork. He grins warmly and then moves over to the door, opening it and bowing his head to Royal.

* * *

Normally, Royal might try and push the container back, say he doesn't need it, that he's got a fridge full of food and takeout at his fingertips. But he doesn't argue, just mumbles a soft, "Cheers," and salutes with it. "We'll be in touch soon." He squeezes his arm, then steps out into the hallway.
