character info
Harry is an information system consultant, archaeologue and curator for hire, who owns a small gallery and office space in the Neon District.
"Harry", part Turkish and part Welsh, has a small office / gallery space in the Neon District. There is a sign on the door reads 'Hayri Davies-Yilmaz: Digital Systems, Curation, Archaeologue". He is available for consultation or hire. He regularly teaches a class over at the University of Bay City on archaeology.
He first made his name in his twenties as a consultant on matters of digital security; sometimes running defense, sometimes offense. He developed a reputation for trustworthiness and reliability; scruplously maintaining adherence to NDA, non-compete clauses, and other nuances of his contracts. This led into a specialization in teams working in archaeology, and began to display a remarkable knack for the field, which led him away from information systems work and towards doing the actual work of archaeology, both remotely and needlecast into fieldwork.
Despite spending the better part of his twenties in the highly competitive (and well paid) vocation of extractive archaeology as a gun for hire, of late, he has made a habit of staying away from thse jobs the last few years. Now that he can afford to choose what work he takes, his passion of late has turned towards the scholarly investigation, the careful excavation and examination of context, the well-reasoned debate. In addition to the expected work on behalf of nonprofits, scholarly consortiums and museums, he does a brisk business in the world of sales and registration of minor Elder artifacts.
As an archaeologue he is known and generally respected, though not yet a 'distinguished' contributor to the field. He routinely publishes papers in the journals of the discipline and is increasingly in demand to appear as a commentator on panel discussions or to deliver an informational lecture. Without formal educational credentials in the field, it has been slower going than it might be, and he has had to make his own way as much through networking and personal appeal as through his intellectual production.
He has curated or assisted in the curation of several notable recent installations. (The more prestigeous the location, the more likely it is that he was an assistant.)
A collector and fan of mystery literature, specifically the detective novel, Harry has begun to wonder if he might be able to turn his astute powers of observation and deduction towards becoming a kind of consulting detective.
Approaching middle age, of middling height and a medium build that is painstakingly kept within the bounds of being moderately athletic although it tends naturally towards a kind of paunchiness. Wavy chestnut hair in a high hairline marking the beginnings of a retreat from the forehead, kept in a kind of tousled, finger-swept fashion. Bushy, dark brows over an unremarkable nose. Depending on the enhancement running, eyes trend from hazel to gunmetal grey, often obscured behind a pair of old-fashioned tortoise-shell frames that are occasionally lit up with a function that simulates an ONI interface and gaze tracker. A bushy but carefully maintained mustache that ranges along the expanse of his upper lip. Good jawline, reasonably strong chin occasionally dusted with stubble. Mostly looks thoughtful; occasionally downcast. When he smiles, it is incandescent.
Clothing generally trends towards the unremarkable, with a lower-bound of 'nondescript' and an upper bound of 'respectable'. A tendency towards shirts with buttons and sleeves that roll up; high waisted trousers, light jackets or blazers in imitation of natural fiber; comfortable shoes. Earth tones mostly, with the occasional foray into cardinal, crimson, salmon, or particularly autumnal shades of orange. The closer business takes him to the Ground, the more he sheds signifiers of prosperity. The closer he gets to heaven, the more he accessorizes.
Academic - Harry has published several peer-reviewed articles in reputable journals, one or two of which have achieved some notice. At present, he is also working as a clinical lecturer offering a single lecture class in archaeology at the University of Bay City. Perhaps you'd like to audit, or sit in on a lecture. Perhaps you're a colleague or peer.
Archaeologue - He is an active participant in the debates of the discipline, and caught up on the latest literature. Interested in the field? He'd be happy to offer an introduction. Questions about the Martians? Harry would be happy to talk about that. (Although he insists on the nomenclature 'Elder' — at least in public-facing discourse.) Or are you flush enough to purchase a small piece of some Elder artifact? With enough credits, nothing is impossible.
Curator - Harry has worked in the past as a curator to setup and manage exhibitions relating to the Elders; for the right payment or prestige, he would be happy to work in this capacity for almost anyone, anywhere, at any time.
Detective Fiction - Harry is a fan, with a modest collection of physical editions (mostly in Turkish; one or two are actually in Welsh from an idiosyncratic press during the mid-22nd century nationalistic Welsh language revival). He has a fanciful notion that his intellect could be applied to the work of consulting detective or even trusty sidekick… he would leap at an opportunity to be of assistance to the police or a registered PI.
Hacker - Harry has a background in the darker side of the digital. Although he has turned it into a fairly legitimate professional path — more in the realm of the White Hat these days — he keeps up a clandestine interest in the Anno. It is a bit of an open secret that he can be found in the Virtual operating as Tobler or Amanvermez; in Podnet, he keeps it strictly anonymous and randomized.
Independent - Harry is his own boss; however, he is not adverse to working with corporations, law enforcement, PIs, other freelancers, or even - if approached discreetly and correctly - the criminal element.
Protectorate - Early in his career (almost two decades ago), Harry got his start working with the Protectorate in an official capacity, assisting with coordination of surveys for resource extraction; since leaving this employment, his consulting work has often involved at least some contact with the Protectorate.
